As a fan of fairy tale retellings, it is always refreshing when a new one comes along that is different from any I have ever read before. The Reflections of Queen Snow White, by David Meredith, is the story I didn't know that I was waiting for, but am so glad that I read. So what happens if a fairy tale is allowed to continue without the “happily ever after” readers have come to expect? This is the very question that Meredith’s tale explores. Snow White married her prince, Charming, and Charming defeated the evil stepmother, but in this book, the story does not stop there. Snow White spent thirty wonderful years with her beloved husband, and she and Charming restored peace to the land. Unfortunately, even a magical love such as theirs cannot stop the hands of time, nor can it keep death at bay. A year has passed since Charming died, and Snow White feels as though she will never be whole again. Their daughter, Raven, is getting married, and it should be a happy time, but all Snow White can feel is loneliness. In an effort to separate herself from the goings-on in the castle, Snow White wanders to the abandoned tower that is now used for little more than storage. While there, she comes upon her stepmother’s magic mirror. In the depths of this mirror’s glass, she will reflect upon her past, and discover truths that have been hiding within her all along.

In The Reflections of Queen Snow White the fairy tale is stripped away and readers are left with a beautiful and poignant tale of life after the death of a loved one. I was astounded by the emotional pull I felt to this story. Often fairy tales, while entertaining, do not have the depth of emotion that this story has. This book had me laughing and crying throughout, and after I finished it, I wanted to tell everyone about it. I expect to read many more great things from David Meredith, and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an amazing story of love and hope.
