An Evening With Grandpa by Diana Matlin a delightful story about how Annie is forced to stay at home because she is unwell. She feels sad, thinking of the long and boring evening at home with Grandpa while her family is having a good time at the theater. But then Grandpa livens up her evening by telling her a story. It is the story of Pawnie, a young girl who lives in the Chess Kingdom. The book then takes readers on the fairy tale adventure of Pawnie, which makes the evening special for Annie and her grandfather.

The author has skilfully blended the game of chess with a whimsical story. It is a perfect story for chess lovers. The grandfather, while telling the story of Pawnie, also explains in a subtle manner how to play the game of chess. It is a refreshing way of explaining a game to a child. The seven chapters of the book are engaging and will keep children glued to the story. The story tells them about courage, concentration, and determination. The moves in the game of chess are explained in a playful manner so that children will not find it boring.

The author has woven entertainment and education and made it a recommended story for children. It is a good bedtime story book, too. School libraries will benefit from having a copy because it helps children to learn about chess. Annie's boring evening with her grandfather transforms into an evening of learning a new game in a fairy tale manner.
