The Child-Man knew Nature intimately, and Nature knew him. Everything is in harmony, and the Child-Man is aware of a wonderful universe inside him, waiting to be opened and explored. He lived in a house of wood and stone, surrounded by nature, and the mountains of his birth sang to him, saying that Water is a teacher and his mentor. Wind and Fire are her brothers, but she instills life into all. Water may change the face of the Rock, but it remains solid. The wholeness of spirit comes from the closeness to the soil. With the Wisdom of Soil comes life, and completeness with the feminine and the masculine. The depth of truth we draw from Nature will be in proportion to the love we possess for all living things. Set forth and tell others these truths.

As I started reading Journey of the Tree Child, I was drawn inexorably into the flowing prose spun with exquisite skill by Joni Smothers. I allowed my mind to roam and soar among the images he conjured, free of earthly cares, becoming one with everything. The writing is melodious and compelling, drawing the reader into a mystical dreamland tale, sprinkled with philosophical truths our modern lifestyle has forgotten, or at best neglected. What I like about this very short book is the absence of any moralizing, leaving the reader to draw his or her own conclusions. The only regret I have is that Joni Smothers has not given me more.
