This is a charmingly illustrated book with an important message for children and adults alike: no matter what your abilities and/or disabilities, everyone has something to offer to someone else.

Buster, a blind, aged dog, is assisted by a deaf kitten, snowball. They watch out for one another and their respective remaining abilities compensate for the losses of physical abilities.

Squack is an albino squirrel and Rocky has injured his paws and yet, they are able to do fine by reaching out and accepting the help of the other forest animals. Polly, the possum, is injured and Midnight, the black crow, has lost his voice. They all get encouragement to keep on working toward what they really want in their lives.

All of the animals are loved by Sally, a Downs Syndrome child, who is not able to display adaptive abilities; she can not live without help. When Sally disappears, the forest animals come together to help find Sally and when she is found, the animals also find a place where they can be safe, loved and valued.

The story is lovely but the reader may come away wishing that more non-handicapped animals and people could see the values that the handicapped animals can see in one another.
