I thought What Would My Coat Say? by Joan Guthmiller was a cute story that helps to teach children that changes are okay. In the story, the author wants the child to imagine that their clothes have a voice and feelings. Every time something happens to the child’s jacket in the story, the question asked is: “What would my coat say about the day?”

I read What Would My Coat Say? with my 4-year-old daughter who hates changes. She was very curious and fascinated with this book. She kept asking me what happened to the boy’s coat and what did it say. That is why I was so happy with the ending, when the question about what the coat would say was finally answered. I thought what the coat would say was just right. Joan Guthmiller’s answer is one I plan to continue to use with my daughter and the things she is attached to.

The illustrations in the story are colorful and cutely drawn. I really liked that the illustrator kept up with each adventure the boy had and subtly showed how the coat changed. The wording in the story is not too difficult and my daughter was able to read most of it by herself.

Overall, my daughter and I enjoyed this story. It is one that I am glad to have read. I would recommend this book to any parent with a child who is afraid of letting things go or one who is afraid of changes. I look forward to reading more of Guthmiller’s work in the future.
