What does it take to make the shift from a life of affluence to that of dependence? What does it take to make a relationship successful? Can there be healing after a devastating loss? Child of Dust by Shoba Sadler is a Christian fiction that answers these questions, the story of a love that is filled with manifold lessons for readers. If not for the American family chauffeur, Bryan Nguyen, the beautiful Cao Kim Lye would not have known how her parents died. Kim has to adjust, and she has to do so quickly; now living in a poor setting compared to the rich life her parents had given her, she goes through a trying time emotionally. While coping with her loss and learning to live simply, she has another problem — Bryan. Her heart is becoming attached to him in ways she doesn’t understand. Must she fight the feeling or indulge in it?

Child of Dust by Shoba Sadler is a character-driven story that excellently showcases Christian values. The characters are complex and compelling, each with a past hurt. While Kim has suffered loss, Bryan Nguyen has been abandoned by his own mother and has known rough weather. With skill and mastery, the author allows the characters to develop slowly, naturally. I wasn’t taken by Kim from the start of the story, but it is interesting to see how the author manages to turn things around; Kim grows into a more mature woman, sure of herself, realistic, and loving. Child of Dust is a story of hope, a story of loss and redemption, and a romance that will speak eloquently to many hearts.
