“Surfing on a Banana Peel” opens with an account of how the author, Brona Fanelle, spent the better part of her early life desperately searching for spiritual meaning and balance. That is until her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Through her mother’s battle and recovery from cancer, Fanelle uncovers the revelations that led her to the balance and meaning that she was searching for. These revelations make up the gist of this non-fiction account. Fanelle discovered that by eating a raw, vegan diet, eliminating acid-forming foods, and drinking pure water (among other health changes) led her to the spiritual awakening that she longed for. The last half of the book is then comprised of journal-type writings of Fanelle’s ‘new’ spiritual life.

I was initially drawn to the title/subject of this book as I have a great interest in how diet can affect our physical and spiritual lives. I find it truly remarkable how some people with cancer beat the disease through natural healing. Fanelle details the changes that she and her mother made in order to win the battle against cancer. I loved reading about these changes and how they transformed their lives. The author perfectly explains how different foods will affect the pH balance inside of our bodies, among many other processes that occur within. Although it is very well-written, the author lost me as she detailed her spiritual awakenings that occurred due to her clean, raw diet. However, other readers may be more ‘new age’ with the spiritual principles that Fanelle writes about.
