When a young man delivers a plate of food to an old farmer, he finds the old man sitting in a cold room staring at a black and white photograph; he has lost the will to live. The young man urges the farmer to talk. What the farmer shared was a look into past. It is a tale of hardships, a tale of forging a new life in a harsh environment.

I often wonder if people today have the stamina to survive what our ancestors survived. Harsh cold winters with no forced air furnace, no electricity, or running water, washing clothes in a creek on a rock, no cars to drive, are a few of the challenges our great grandparents faced. I admire the people from our past. They had stick-to-itiveness. They stood by each other no matter what.

In Jenford, Hendrik E. Sadi shares a view of the world that many have forgotten. His style is narrative. This is an endearing, thoughtful story. I felt as though I had been transported back in time. Fans of fiction and history will enjoy, Jenford: A short history of Upland.
