Book Review
Shauna and her brother were in an accident. For several weeks, Shauna lay in a coma. When she wakes up, she has no memory of the last six months. Her father, a Texas senator with Presidential aspirations, and stepmother blame her for the accident that left her younger brother severely brain damaged. Determination to seek the truth places Shauna in grave danger.

This delightful Christian novel is never preachy but touches on faith in God. Ted Dekker and Erin Healy work well together. I will be watching for more of their combined efforts. Kiss has a touch of paranormal, with enough twist and turns to keep the reader on the edge of their seat.

I received my pre-ordered copy of Ted Dekker & Erin Healy's Kiss from Amazon about ten days before the official release date. I finished reading the book yesterday. MINOR SPOLIERS FOLLOW. Kiss is Dekker's first attempt at collaborating on a book with a female author, and the feminine touch is definitely visible in the book. Shauna McAllister, daughter of pharmaceutical magnate/Senator/Presidential candidate Landon McAllister, woke up in a hospital bed missing six months of her memory, in a room surrounded by a boyfriend she didn't remember, her beloved adopted "uncle" and her abusive, hateful stepmother. Injured in a tragic car accident that severely disabled her dear brother, Shauna finds herself struggling to piece together her memory and the details of the accident when she stumbles upon a new and unexplained ability. Shauna finds herself able to tap the memories of other people with a simple kiss or a touch. She quickly learns that her ability not only allows her to see into the past through the memories of others, but to strip those others of the memory she steals. As she soon finds herself fighting for her life and the cause of truth, Shauna struggles to control this new-found talent and to use it to her benefit as she tries to regain six lost months of her life. Dekker and Healy have crafted an extraordinary tale of suspense, intrigue, romance, and political scandal in Kiss. If you've been a Dekker fan for long, this latest is a must-have in your Dekker library. Reminiscent of Dekker's Thr3e and Obsessed, Kiss leaves the world of the Circle behind and explores the unexplained that surrounds us. This is truly one of Dekker's best works to date.

Kiss, by Ted Dekker and Erin Healy, superbly shows the courage everyone wishes they had in them. The main character, Shauna, demonstrates the utter truth of many sibling relationships through her jealousy and love for her brother Rudy. Through the relatable text and use of metaphors one feels as though the book is coming to life in his or her own room. The reader will find his or herself getting angry at the main character, feeling the almost forbidden love she has, and also the complete sadness she feels when putting herself in life or death situations out of her need to find out the truth. Dekker and Healy lead the reader on an adventure in which the daughter of a presidential candidate winds up in a devastating accident that paralyzes her brother. She is now forced to live with the fact that she was the driver and that it was her fault for the accident, yet she is not completely convinced. She believes the accident was set up, but she needs to figure out by who and the reason for doing this to her family. As she searches for the truth among the lies, she realizes that despite her memory loss, her accident has given her a mysterious "super power." As Shauna goes on this adventure to regain her memory and to learn the truth she runs into conflicts with her own lack of control over her "super power." Although this book is easy to get into, there are a lot a lot of parts that the reader has to connect on their own. The reader also has to be able to understand the characters and put themselves in the shoes of Shauna. My only criticism of this book is that it is a work out for the brain. I can hardly even call that a criticism, but it must be told in case the reader does not like this element for their choice of books. It may seem easy to understand because the words are not hard, but the reader has to be able to take different parts of the book and connect them to create the story. Also, if the reader has a strong dislike for God and Christianity, this book would not be for them. This is because Shauna says numerous times to help her cope with the fear a little saying that her mother used to say to her: "God is with me. Jesus is here. The Spirit is greater than my fear" (Dekker/Healy 80). This was one of my favorite books to read and I would recommend it to anyone because of its alluring writing style and its ability to teach the reader so many things. Just a couple of these things include: learning to love, never giving up, and always striving to learn the truth. Dekker and Healy demonstrate a need for a moral and truthful person in a world of sin and deception; this is what they created when they made Shauna. Shauna will teach America how to be.

I started this book on a Saturday and was finished by Monday night. It was different from any of his other books, I loved the story line. Ted Dekker ready knows how to get you hooked. I bought the book as soon as I read the excerpts and couldn't wait. Sometimes what you learn from the past, can help and improve your future.

Kiss is one of those books that pulled me in right away, and kept me hanging on the whole way through. Full of suspense, Kiss presented interesting characters caught up in a mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat. I'm not a reader of romance books, so I was a little leery (I mean, with a name like "Kiss," you have to wonder). But while there was some romance, it wasn't overdone, and it didn't overshadow the thrills -- that's definitely a good thing. I've long enjoyed Ted Dekker's books and his collaboration with Erin Healy on this book was definitely a success. There were Ted's signature thrills and chills, and a touch of paranormal (though not so much as to be "way out there"), but it was well-written from a female perspective. Looking for a book that'll keep you up too late turning pages? One where you keep saying, "Just one more chapter" but can't seem to stop? Pick up Kiss!

I recently signed up for book review program through Thomas Nelson. The first book I chose to review was Kiss, by Ted Dekker and Erin Healy. I have to admit, when I first started the book, it took me a while to get into the story. In fact, I read the first few chapters and then put the book aside for about a week. I finally started reading it again one night of this past week and could not put it down. Kiss is the story of Shauna McAllister, who is the daughter of a very influential, presidential candidate. The book starts with Shauna in a hospital in a coma after a horrible car accident. As she starts to awaken from the coma, she realizes that she has lost about 6 months worth of memories. Throughout her recovery, she is constantly trying to figure out what is truth, what is a lie, and whom she can believe. Shauna also discovers she has very unusual powers of the mind, being able to take memories from those whom she connects with. Shauna eventually learns the truth, and in the process finds love, both the love of man and of the Lord. I can't say much more about the book without giving away everything, but suffice it to say this was a great book!

I started this book with great excitement and high hopes. The premise sounded fascinating and it's the first book I've read by Ted Dekker (co-written with Erin Healy). It started out great. The prologue grabbed me and I couldn't stop turning the pages. I read the first half in one day. Almost in one sitting. Twists, turns, high stakes, and a maze of clues all made for an exhilarating read. But, once Shauna starts figuring out who she can and cannot trust, it started to lose me. More than once, she puts herself in situations that make no sense. Her father, Landon McAllister, seems a bit gullible for a presidential candidate. And the final confrontation felt somewhat anticlimactic, with Shauna not taking a big enough role. Having said all that, I still enjoyed the book and would rate it at 4 out of 5 stars. I just wish the end had lived up to the promise of the beginning.

I'm not normally one to pick up a mystery novel. Don't usually like them, for whatever reason. But "Kiss" makes me want to go out and get more of Ted Dekker's books--it was that good. I really enjoyed Shauna's quest to discover what happened to her in the "missing" six months of her life and who was really responsible for the accident that disabled her brother and stole her memories, as well as her struggle to determine whom she could trust. The pacing was excellent--it was the type of book you want to stay up until two in the morning reading (and I very nearly did!). The suspense was great--I couldn't get a handle on who the bad guys really were until close to the end of the book. There was political intrigue, amnesia, money-laundering and murder--everything you would want out of a good suspense story. Parts of the plot were a bit far-fetched, but it is fiction, after all. My only real criticism is that the Christian theme is a little weak for a Christian publisher. Shauna's faith (or lack thereof) was only mentioned in passing through most of the book, and the way the issue was resolved in the end was a little too anti-climactic.

Ted Dekker knows how to spin a tale that makes the improbable seem possible. Whether it is a child who can heal multitudes as in "Blessed Child" or a woman who can steal memories from others through physical touch and emotional vulnerability as in "Kiss", Dekker's stories make the surreal come alive. In "Kiss" Dekker joins with author Erin Healy in creating a story that keeps the reader on edge and looking over his or her shoulder, never knowing who can be trusted. Although the story is billed by some as a romance, that isn't the central theme of the book. Heart-warming relational connections do find their way into the story, but the real thrill is in the suspense of a good mystery and in the psychological phenomena woven tightly in the plot. Dekker's writing has drawn me in like few authors can. I hesitated to pick up the books because I'm not a fan of Sci-Fi or Fantasy fiction. But now I see that his writing is neither. There are no aliens or fantasy creatures. Instead, his style introduces supernatural events in everyday situations. Healy adds enough of the feminine touch to this story that both male and female readers will enjoy this gripping account of emotional healing and reconciliation. I give "Kiss" five big smackeroos.
