Book Review What happens when you bring together an assortment of down and out street musicians? You start a band. This is exactly what Bert Ingram plans to do. Once he was a successful representative in the music business, touring the countryside, bars and clubs, signing up new groups. But as life goes along, he fell on hard luck and just faded into the background. Now he is trying to make a new start. As he scouts the streets and subways of San Francisco, he looks for people with musical ability and also with the desire to overcome obstacles in life. He finds a guitar playing college student, a classical music piano playing teacher, a card shark Sax player, a rusty drummer, an aged bass player, and a blind singer to round out the band as he gathers the group together. They are from different walks of life, different ages and different types of music. How can they make this work?
“The Redeemers” was the perfect name for their band. They are all redeeming themselves from life on the streets. With all the different personalities and age groups there is bound to be conflict. Can Bert hold them together and redeem himself in the music world? They soon learn that there is more to gain by sticking together than living life on the streets playing for nickels and dimes.
This is a very fast read and is very enlightening. The characters all play a major part throughout the story and are very easy to connect with. The underlying theme of the story is, if you have a dream... pursue it; don’t let anyone destroy your chance at success. Excellent book with a wonderful ending.
