"Ode to Icky" written by Maranda Russell and illustrated by Nicolas Peruzzo is a cute story about a girl making the best of a bad situation and teaches children to think about the consequences of their actions. Icky is like most cats, except for the fact that Icky does not clean himself and no one can stand to be around him. Icky's owner, Candy, smells a new perfume that her older sister has bought and she believes it smells like Icky, so she decides to cut some of Icky's fur in order to bottle and sell perfume of Icky's scent. Candy sells out what she makes at school; however, she finds out it was not a good idea once she returns home.

This is an entertaining story that children will enjoy reading or having read to them. Adults will enjoy this story as it will generate a discussion between the adult and child(ren) about how actions and how there are always consequences to our actions. Candy is trying to make a bad situation good; however, what she believes to be a good plan really is not. A great discussion would also be about possible other ways to make the situation better which may result better as well. The illustrations are well-done and go along nicely with the story. The story flows well and has a good length to hold a child's attention span. There are a few words that would need to be explained to young children, such as confiscated; but in general this book would be great for younger children and older ones as well!
