Evelyn Barrett was a highly successful attorney whose husband Eddie loves her despite her temper and outgoing, outspoken ways. On page 88, Eddie says of the day they met when Evelyn marched up to the AT&T phone yard demanding to speak with a supervisor, "I knew I had to do one of two things: put you in your place or marry you. "Then Evelyn and Eddie's beautiful four year old daughter, Corinne, is abducted, sexually abused and murdered while her nanny naps in the soft spring air. Evelyn and Eddie are distraught over Corinne's death, but Evelyn goes on the attack, looking for vengeance. She confronts Police detectives Pete Shaw and Brian Thatcher who admire her but could do without her perpetual interference in their cases as she continues her search for Corinne's killer. Then, Evelyn gets herself disbarred and badly injured when she enters the home of potential child molester Robert Bailey and kills him. She and Eddie separate and now Evelyn can identify the scent of pedophiles and child abusers. To her they smell like "unholy hunger." Evelyn neglects herself but not her quest for justice and begins following real estate salesman Paul McMillan who drives to a nearby school, parks and watches the children exit the school building. Detectives Shaw and Thatcher and Eddie Barrett watch over Evelyn but will she ever find her daughter's killer without getting killed herself?
