Karl Sebastian's A Misfortunate Misfit follows his tumultuous struggle with weight loss and the good and bad of successfully losing weight. Despite working toward his goal mostly alone, Karl found success and writes to encourage others to never give up on their weight loss journey. His story covers different stages in his life. As a child, Sebastian struggled with low self-esteem and feeling like a misfit among his schoolmates. At a later stage in his life, we see how his weight issue cost him his engineering dream and important relationships. When Karl eventually resolved to lose weight, he had to come to terms with the part he had played in his weight gain and the complications that resulted from losing as much weight as he did and his weight loss approach. Karl's story is about a man's growth and his journey to taking responsibility for his choices.

Karl Sebastian's story is quite detailed, revealing the intricacies of his personal actions and his struggle with dysmorphia, owning his choices, stigma, and other issues. I was shocked at how a new online gaming friend spoke about a carpenter, stating that he traumatized his children for being overweight. The author guides the reader thoughtfully by offering suggestions and words of advice on how best to incorporate the book's insights. He doesn't claim to know it all but encourages readers to find their own path. A Misfortunate Misfit is not only great for individuals who wish to lose weight. It's an inspiring story that will appeal to anyone who wishes to achieve any important goal in life. I truly admire Sebastian's resilience and his depth of self-knowledge. His book is high on my list of favorite against-all-odds memoirs.
