In Beta Rising, L.C. Son shows Mark Helsing, a wolf shifter, mourning the loss of his love, Braelyn. After weeks have gone by, the Prime Leader, Jackson, enters Mark’s room and tells him it is time for him to return to the pack. Jackson proclaims Mark is now the Alpha and needs to fulfill his duty to save them from being Dune Cursed. At the copula ritual, Mark will have to choose a mate for life, even if he doesn’t love them. He finds himself drawn to one woman. When he removes her hood, he finds Claudia. Claudia is a former love who had broken his heart and tried to kill his mentor. Unable to turn back, the pair are sent to consummate the union. If Mark fails, then his pack will be victims of the Dune Curse.
Every character in the story comes to life with the creative descriptions written by L.C. Son. The pain Mark feels over losing Braelyn is relatable. I could feel his despair and understood his depression since he thought he had been powerless to prevent her death. I think his wolf has a sick sense of humor, especially when it pairs him with Claudia. The tension is palpable with the lack of trust between the couple. It was entertaining to watch Claudia attempt to play the role of a domestic maid in the dirty cabin where the pack sent them. The suspense held me captive, as I needed to know what had caused the rift between Mark and Claudia. I can’t imagine being forced to live the rest of my life with someone I hate. I would have fought against the archaic laws. Beta Rising is perfect for fans of Shifter romance stories full of well-described characters.
