“Could getting 3.5 percent of the population to actively and collectively participate in nonviolent communication over a sustained period of time positively change our global discourse?" This question lies at the heart of Shola Richards’ Civil Unity: The Radical Path to Transform Our Discourse, Our Lives, and Our World. In it, Richards offers inspirational stories and practical advice to readers weary of the uncivil disunity found in their lives, whether in their families, their workplaces, or their communities. The radical path he advocates can be distilled into two simple words, be kind. However, this path is far more complicated than a mere turning of the other cheek. On the contrary, Richards guides his readers through a labyrinth of possible scenarios, scores of motivational anecdotes, as well as actionable advice for those willing to walk with him. He is a man with one mission – to create a better world one person at a time.

What I appreciated the most about Civil Unity is Shola Richards’ willingness to reveal past abuses which have spurred his awareness of the value of civility. His brutal honesty in doing so illustrated to me not only his sincerity but also his passion for his subject. I also enjoyed, as a fellow writer, his fluid and vibrant prose style and his wicked sense of humor. He makes it clear that being kind is not necessarily the same as being nice. Finally, I also enjoyed his review of logical fallacies in his effort to help combat disinformation online. As a former educator, I realize the importance of teaching them – if more people learned to recognize illogical statements made by themselves or others, the world would indeed be a better place.
