Finding Freedom: A Ukrainian Tale of Home by Maryna Kariuk is an inspiring children’s picture book about keeping freedom alive within yourself, and taking solace in familiar comforts, despite what is happening around you. The narrative has a beautiful poetic rhyme that rolls off the tongue. “The sun rays kiss my freckled face. Sunflowers peck my cheeks. White storks above spread wings with grace…” is an example of the lyrical eloquence displayed. Ksenia Markevych creates bright colorful illustrations throughout. Each page has a whimsical whirlwind of energetic colors that seep into you.
Maryna Kariuk’s Finding Freedom is a deeply moving story. There is so much to be learned from it, not only concerning the ongoing spirit of the people of Ukraine but also the inclusion of traditional foods and events. It’s this perfect combination of story-telling with an educational bent that creates an interest in other cultures and places in the world. The book would be the perfect addition to any home as well as a kindergarten or elementary school where children want to learn more about traditions and ways of life in other countries.
