Author Biography

Jonna Ocampo volunteers on the island of Oahu by providing education, public awareness and conservation in the Spirit of Aloha as a Honu Guardian and helping to create a Hawaiian dry forest. She is a Commercial Scientist-Astronaut Candidate with Project PoSSUM, contributed to her community as a volunteer, performing political constituency work in Jersey City, New Jersey, and served her community as a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol in Addison, Texas. Her beliefs are writing to inspire, photographing to create a vision, and sharing to give hope. Dreams can become reality, mālama pono (take care) and mahalo nui loa (thank you very much).

Such colorful, friendly animals! Children will love the illustrations of cuddly animals created by illustrator Rich Olson in On My Way to the Lilikoi Tree by Jonna Amato Ocampo. The well-designed front cover attracts the attention of children and parents and draws them into the book, where they won’t be disappointed. A beautiful mix of bold colors with pastel backgrounds sets the tone for On My Way to the Lilikoi Tree. The friendly, adorable animals help tell the story of how Fluffy Fluff the rabbit meets Honu the turtle, Hula Hula the bear, and the Hinas seal pups. The four new friends join Fluffy Fluff on an adventure to find the Lilikoi Tree. Author Jonna Amato Ocampo takes us on an imaginative trip on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

On My Way to the Lilikoi Tree introduces a few Hawaiian phrases like the greeting “aloha,” and “auwé” which means "Oh dear! Goodness!" Author Jonna Amato Ocampo shares some of the landscape and culture of Hawaii, including the hibiscus flower, bananas, and coconut trees on their quest to find the special tree. Get to know the state of Hawaii by reading this interesting adventure of five animal friends. They also try rowing an outrigger or canoe. I like the map at the back of the book showing the path these new friends took to find the Lilikoi Tree. After seeing the map, I wanted to read the story again. The 10 fun facts about Hawaii and the definitions of Hawaiian words help us to better understand Hawaii. Parents will enjoy reading this wonderful story to young children.
