Set in the near future in the year 2027, Collapse is a story about a United States of America that is on the verge of collapse. It is the country’s Second Great Depression and the most powerful hurricane on record has torn apart Florida. The same natural disaster is heading towards Texas, too. With the Middle East united as one for the first time in history, the main characters -- Howard Beck, Richard Dupree, and Maxwell Harris -– are trying to save America, not only from natural disasters and corrupt politicians but also from a hidden army of terrorists now on American soil. Will they be able to save the US and prevent their beloved country’s downfall?

From start to finish, Collapse really grabbed my attention. The thought of America’s fall alone is a frightening idea. How would you feel if it really happened in the near future? How will the world react to this nightmare? Author Richard Stephenson’s dystopian novel is undoubtedly the most intriguing book I have read recently because makes me feel uncomfortable. I am sure the story and the setting itself will also creep other readers out. It is superbly written, making it sound very realistic. Imagine America in the worst case scenario and you get the setting of this book.

The development of the three primary characters also adds to the success of this book. Told from the characters’ point of view, the author creates different characters that his readers can easily relate to. The author is unapologetic in his post-apocalyptic debut novel and I like it because he remains true to his intention. Reading this book is like riding a roller coaster ride to disaster!
