Author Biography

Rosalind Abbott

Rosalind Abbott, at age 20, during a time when many of us are considering what career to choose was given the news she had Leukaemia. The shock was, she only had a 50/50 chance to live: Rosalind found herself having to fight for her life.

Rosalind said:

“Finding out I had a type of cancer, a ‘disease’ with a low chance of survival, sent me into shock, my inner strength and belief that I was put on this earth to do so much more, pulled me through. I then saw this as a challenge, an opportunity to grow even stronger than I ever was… of course I had my ups and downs, but I was here to live.

It was an amazing challenge; I found out how powerful the mind really is and my ability to overcome something like this. I found out for the first time who I really am and how grateful I am to be here, as well as discovering amazing strengths – not only my own, but my family’s too. This event brought us so much closer than ever before.”

Now almost 20 years in remission, Rosalind has found her life purpose – her passion. She is on her path as an author and is writing books to encourage and empower children to read out loud. “The stories just started flowing”, she said of rediscovering a love of creating real life stories with a rhythm and a rhyme. It has become such a great joy.

A Pet for Me by Rosalind Abbott is a beautiful story for children about caring and sharing. Pets always add to the charm of a family group and have a space of their own in the house. They should be loved and taken care of well. Having a pet brings a certain amount of responsibility to the child who is taught that when you have a pet, you have to take care of it, too. That duty teaches every child a certain amount of responsibility and is a way of keeping them occupied.

A Pet for Me is a book that will appeal to all children. The illustrations are lively and colorful and make all the characters come alive. It introduces the concept of owning pets very beautifully, and it explains how each pet should be taken care of. It teaches a child to be responsible too, which is excellent. The children can train their pets and make them also responsible and obedient. It is a beautiful book with a message which is delightful and endearing and will keep the child reader engaged. It would make a good bedtime read and is also ideal for read-aloud sessions in the library and classroom.
