Author Biography

Naomi confesses that the best word to describe her is: whimsical. Forget about “the girl next door” and think more along the lines of “the girl from the next galaxy over” and you’d be closer to the correct personality categorization. She is an unequivocal day-dreamer, anime enthusiast, partisan of fantastical things, and unshakable devotee to story-telling.

In addition to writing, Naomi sings, draws, reads, plays console games, does the occasional concept art commissions, is on standby as a movie/ commercial extra, and works with rescued animals. Her love for absorbing fabulous, unforgettable stories is only out-shined by her love for creating her own.

Currently, she lives with her equally peculiar sister, two wild but wonderful nephews, cheeky little niece, her adorable, fun-loving cats, Kyo and Yuki, and a blessedly tolerant housemate on the Gold Coast, Australia.

With the aid of a filly unicorn, full of spirit, an enormous guardian of the forest, and a phantom which chills one to the bone with its eyes, Laeka’Draeon, the last of the dragons, must venture into places that he has never seen before and realms that are wrought with peril in Kin Seeker: Book One of Dragon Calling by N.R. Eccles-Smith. He is in search of his missing kin in an attempt to restore the magical fortress and turrets of Klonnoth Aire. If the fortress at Klonnoth Aire cannot be restored before the return of an enemy with incredible destructive powers from archaic times, there will be nothing left of his home. The kingdoms around him, which are already in a shambles, will be lost as well. The first challenge that he must overcome, however, is his loss of memory. He has no clue how the towers fell and how the dragons disappeared. With his unlikely entourage in tow, Laeka’Draeon sets out on an adventure in order to restore his life and the lives of those around him.

N.R. Eccles-Smith establishes a story line and a set of characters that not only capture the imagination with their creativity and vivid personalities, but also lead the reader on a quest of self-discovery as well. Not only is this a story of restoring a fortress and towers and being united with one’s family, but it is a story of how one might face numerous challenges and overcome them in spite of overwhelming odds. It illustrates how the gifts of different individuals combine to make a group that can come together and overcome the odds. This is an inspiring tale, full of adventure and suspense. It is certainly an awesome introduction into a larger series which is sure to capture the attention of a huge following.

Naomi writes with such clarity and insight that takes you on an adventure into amazing places where you meet characters that draw you into this adventure again and again.I also recommend this book for adults not just children. There is a purity and innocence that is so missing in much of todays writings but the story still manages to portray the raw and gutsy reality of what life can be at times. This is a great adventure and highly recommended.

This is one of those special books where you are drawn in to the story by a style of storytelling that is simply captivating. It is an experience that leaves you eagerly awaiting the next book. The art work is awesome. I would love to see this story in an animated DVD series.

I’m a sucker for a good dragon novel. And when I learned that this novel’s main protagonist was a dragon, I simply had to read it. I was not disappointed.

This is a delightful and enjoyable tale that follows the journey of an endearing little dragon who awakens to find all his memories gone, and all his kin missing. What follows is part mystery and part quest, and the writing and developed world was reminiscent of works like Narnia, and The Last Unicorn. Although classified MG, this is a tale that can be enjoyed by all ages.

In his search for his family, ‘Little Dragon’ meets a number of other mythical characters, which range from magical to comic to downright terrifying – satyrs, giants, centaurs, and a beautiful if somewhat flighty unicorn called Ubi.

There are many moments of brilliance in this novel, from the superb little epigraphs that commence each chapter to the language of magic that Eccles-Smith has created. It all gives a amazing sense of place and reality to the magical world.

The plot is full of action and life-and-death situations, and although it feels a little episodic towards the end, the characters are enjoyable enough to care about. The novel ends on a cliff-hanger, and I’m looking forward to the next instalment.

Watch out for N.R. Eccles-Smith. I expect big things from her, and a bright future as an upcoming Australian fantasy author.
