The setting is the early Vietnam era. Adie found an old journal and immersed herself in the story of Tempe, a slave. The young women’s lives are similar. Tempe is grieving for her children. Her master has decided to sell them. The journal provides Adie a place to escape while her husband is unfaithful, she struggles to raise her child and deal with long buried grief of losing her sister.
Throughout this book, I could hear the beautiful southern drawls of the characters. This is southern fiction at its finest. J.L. Miles weaves two stories together. The two young brides were born a century apart yet with so much in common. From the first page, I was hooked. MS. Miles takes readers back in time, reminding them of the roots of prejudice and slavery. The characters make this book. They bring out emotion in you, one moment I was crying and the next I was laughing. I felt as though I was part of the story. There are twists and terms throughout this book. If you like fiction you will love this book.
