Mark's Strength by Sky Elizabeth Wieland is the second in a series. If you've not read the first book, Sarah's Gift, you might be a bit lost for a while. This book takes off when Sarah has been injured and is basically in shock. She and her husband Mark are under the Witness Protection program, having been removed from the jungle to a nearby village. Sarah barely functions and Mark ruminates on how best to help his wife out of the fog. Without any consultation with those in a position to protect the couple, Mark settles upon a spontaneous plan to take Sarah back to the jungle where they had once thrived. He hopes that re-establishing friendships, and getting Sarah in touch with the elephant herd she risked her life to save, might just facilitate Sarah's re-engaging in life. But Mark has not counted on the fact that there are still those who wish to bring harm to the couple and that the evil men have been keeping track of Mark and Sarah.

Although Mark's Strength was a bit slow to develop, it picked up when Sarah and Mark meet Kwanele, an orphan boy whose caretaker has just been brutally murdered. I liked the way Sarah and Mark began to instill trust in the boy and how gradually, as Kwanele began to trust in the protection of God, he was able to reach out for help and accept the love he was offered. In many ways, author Wieland developed Kwanele as the strongest character in the novel and most readers will identify with the difficult choices offered to the young boy. And, we will cheer for his continued success.
