Dogs of a Different Collar by Marti Regan is about two girls living in two different backgrounds. They adopt a poodle puppy from the same litter. Abby takes the pup with a green collar. Abby feels sorry leaving the pup with the pink collar back in the litter, but her father allows her to take only one pup. Sophie picks up the poodle pup with a pink collar. While Abbie comes from a stable and sound family background, Sophie's parents are workaholics. Sophie looks at Rosie, her pup, as her best friend. Though Abby is happy with her pup, Kelly, she keeps wondering about the pup with the pink collar. The book takes us through the lives of these two girls and the pups they adopted.
The book speaks about the contrasting images of two girls and their life styles. Their backgrounds define their personalities and characteristics. Each one has a unique relationship with the pup they adopted. The story lingers on the lives of these two girls and the pups, Rosie and Kelly. The story is simple and light. The author writes an endearing story about two parallel lives led by two people and the common link being the litter from where they adopted their pups. The story resonates well with readers.
The style of narrating the story is simple and informal. Readers keep wondering whether Sophie and Abbie would ever meet and likewise for Rosie and Kelly. The connection between the two girls due to the adoption of pups is effectively put forth by the author.
