Buzz Manning by Brett Hopson is a humorous story set in Vancouver. The story takes us through many hilarious moments in Kevin and Buzz's lives. The two men basically lead a lazy and easy-going existence with a lot of women and frivolous relationships. Their dream is to make money the easy way without any struggle. That lazy characteristic makes them hang around women who are rich and can help them with money. Buzz plays the guitar and considers himself to be a musician while Kevin flits from one meaningless job to another. The story takes us from youth to their old age.

Both men have no real interest in working and earning their own money and they try to live off Buzz's girlfriend, April Chen, who has an apartment and a car. Kevin and Buzz have many comic adventures. Mr. Barton's writing class is another scene which will make readers smile at the incidents happening in that class. There is never a dull moment in the book. The portrayal of Buzz and Kevin are apt and the descriptions remind you of the type of men you run into in your life, in university, and at work.

The style of writing is fluent and effortless. The story flows smoothly. The comic quotient is kept up till the end in a funny and subtle way. The characters of Kevin and Buzz is well supported by Naomi, April, Jorge etc. The book is light, frivolous and amusing.

Buzz Manning by Brett Hopson is a novel giving a detailed account of the life of two friends, Buzz Manning and Kevin Klaus, over a forty-year period. Kevin is a man at whom life has thrown many challenges but he was never one to give up. The fact that he had attained a Master's degree in urban geography would ideally mean Kevin getting a good job and settling down. However, employment did not come easily and since he had a family to support, he took on any job he could; from digging ditches, to working at the City Council, to being a part-time janitor at the church and everything in between. His friend Buzz, however, dropped out of school early and would rather find a woman to support him than find work. Buzz is the type of man who watches a man drowning while he relaxes on the beach, smoking his cigarette.

Buzz Manning by Brett Hopson is a work of fiction that combines drama, adventure, and a touch of humor. Brett Hopson gives an entertaining description of the lives of two friends who are so different and yet so alike. The book describes two men who were friends since their teenage years and, although they eventually chose to take different paths in life, their paths keep crossing and they manage to stay friends. One is a hard working man, doing his best to provide for his family while the other is the lazy type who would rather be fed by others. Buzz Manning is the type of easy read that you take with you to the beach and keep turning the pages as the sun goes down.
