A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed is a beautifully written and illustrated book by author Sally Saffer. The reader will follow "Little Wise Guy," an owl, throughout the book to learn interesting and valuable truths. This book deals with the concept of how to be a friend to someone, even when you aren't being treated in a friendly way. We quickly find there is always someone around us who is lonely or not a part of the 'in crowd.' We must look for that individual and reach out to them with kindness. Many times our feelings of anxiety and loneliness are very similar to what they may be feeling. So, when we reach out, we are helping them overcome their struggles just as we are becoming a stronger individual.

Author Saffer shares vivid illustrations to help the reader visualize the story' concepts. This book allows children to read from their level and learn that they are not the only person who is experiencing difficulties within the world. There are practical and insightful guidelines to learn to become that special friend to someone who may need you. This allows you to learn how to be a friend as well as allowing your own hurts and disappointments to be healed. This isn't a long book, so children should welcome the opportunity to read. The book gets straight to the point so the one important lesson doesn't get lost in many pages. This book would be a great addition to schools, libraries, and for parents to read to their children and discuss this valuable truth found within.
