A Rocky Start: A Case Study in Letter by Dirk Fisher is a candid peek into the complex life of the author. The book is the outcome of the author's experiences and the effect it had on his perspective towards life. The author has exposed his life and story through a series of letters and many readers will relate to what the author has experienced. The book takes us through the author's journey of agony, humiliation, and his various treatment programs with honesty. The book also reveals the state of the American mental health establishment and the way it functions, the damage it causes to the people who really requires its services and much more.

The book grabs the attention of readers with its authenticity, uniqueness in theme, and honest depiction of happenings. The author's story is disturbing and at times the narration of his mental state is humorous, too. The chaotic psychiatric ward and the edgy and unpredictable behavior of the nurses exposes the inefficient functioning of the American mental health establishment. The author has spoken candidly and in detail about all the ordeals he has undergone and the treatment meted out to him.

The honesty and candor of the book makes it an engaging and refreshing read. The author does quote from the Scriptures in a few places to give more weight to his thoughts, which lends a spiritual angle to his writing.
