Paula and her Multi-coloured Hair, a children’s book written by Carmen Parets Luque, is a short story that illustrates how a girl experiences various emotions. Paula experiences sadness when her father leaves for work and her hair turns blue and wraps around her like a scarf. When Paula is angry, her hair becomes red and stands straight up. At times when Paula feels scared, her hair covers her face as a protection or barrier against what is causing her to feel afraid. Paula’s hair turns pink when she is feeling happy or she makes others feel happy. Paula also shares how she is able to feel better when she is feeling sad or mad, or how she is able to feel safe again once she is feeling scared.

Carmen Parets Luque has created a book that children will be able to read and relate to the character. Paula, the main character in Carmen’s book, Paula and her Multi-coloured Hair, describes how she feels when she is experiencing various emotions. Paula describes how she visualizes her hair changing color to match her mood. This is a great approach to take as children are often encouraged to think about how their entire bodies feel when they are experiencing certain emotions as this helps them determine what they are feeling and how to help themselves. The book ends with Paula stating that she will share her feelings with someone whom she knows will listen and this helps; this is a key lesson for children to learn as talking and sharing with someone will help. It is also an excellent reminder to adults to be a good listener as this is what children need. I highly recommend this book to use with children and it would be an excellent resource for school counselors or social workers working with children.
