Wounded Beacon by Leslie Lee Sanders is a short novella that takes place on post-apocalyptic Earth. The people are forced to band together in small camps in order to survive. In one of these camps, a man named Luke escapes from the grasp of a bully leader, Santos. On his flight, he rescues three men who have been taken prisoner for speaking out against Santos and his friend. They flee through the forest, but two of the men want to return for their families. The third, a man named Aiden, remains to take care of Luke, who was temporarily blinded during the struggle with the other two. The pair of men pick their way to the ocean and an old lighthouse. While at the lighthouse, both reflect on their situation and Luke laments leaving the camp, having once been declared a good leader. A relationship develops between the men until they are discovered. Despite threats of death, they return and the inhabitants have to decide who they want to lead them into a better future.

Miss Sanders tells a heart-warming tale of two men brought together by unlikely circumstances. Aiden brings love back into Luke’s hardened heart after the deaths of his partner and daughter. I really enjoyed reading this story. It was fast-paced and exciting. I was left wondering more than once whether or not Luke and Aiden would be caught by Santos and his band of hunters. I was glad in the end that Luke returned and was able to let go of his past. Wounded Beacon is a perfect read for anyone wanting a little bit of spice with their post-apocalyptic fiction.
