Desperate in DC by Phoebe Thompson and Crystal Walker is a delightful look into the lives of mothers trying to balance responsibilities and live life in Washington, DC. This book is filled with messages, correspondences, and personal reflections which give the reader a look into the ladies’ private lives and also the political and social scene in this city. This blog type book explores their thoughts and lives, including the struggles between balancing being a wife, mother, employee and friend. There are thoughts and ponderings about having extra-marital affairs, finding nannies, taking trips, and daily life in general.

When I initially saw this book, all I could think of is “Gossip Girl,” a highly addictive book and television series and really my first impression was not far off as Desperate in DC is set in a city and chronicles the lives of women trying to survive and thrive. I found this book to be just as addictive and enjoyable, truly a guilty pleasure. I loved the variety of social media included as it really made this book current and even more relatable. At first, I thought it may be difficult to really get into the story and be able to follow along, but I was completely wrong! I was immediately drawn into the story and the lives of these women and did not want to stop reading, There were so many times I found myself laughing out of loud and also so many times that I felt as if I was right there in the story. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to find that right balance in his or her life and needing an escape from that life as well.
