In the Sanctity of Revenge by Brian Schnoor begins in a middle class neighborhood in Chicago where Jack Hanlon is living an ideal life with his wife and sons. Across the street, Irene Kelly is an elderly widow who has adopted, and been adopted by, the Hanlon family. As the book opens, Jack is anticipating a huge and unexpected bonus from his employer that will have him set for life. In anticipation of the windfall, he puts his life savings into an education fund for his children. Across the street, Mrs. Kelly is living a comfortable life until a worker knocks on her door and convinces her that the roof on her aging house must be replaced. So begins two parallel stories that quickly move the reader into a shadowy place where revenge becomes the most important part of the characters’ lives.

In the Sanctity of Revenge is a dark novel. In this book, Brian Schnoor has created a memorable cast of characters and a plot reminiscent of the twists in an O. Henry short story. However, this book explores the dark nature that can be inside even the kindest of individuals when they are pushed to the point of wanting revenge. In the Sanctity of Revenge explores the rightness or virtuousness of revenge when the human spirit is pushed to the limit. Not for the reader looking for a light read with a happy ending, but if you are looking for a good plot with well-developed characters, this book may be the one for you!
