Author Biography

"In general, I write about women's issues. But my passion in life is to change the way the culture regards battered women, and help them to reclaim their lives after escaping an abuser." - Jenna Brooks

A staunch Mothers Rights advocate, Jenna Brooks is a bestselling novelist, a seminar author and instructor, a columnist, and a professionally trained and certified coach, specializing in divorce, post-divorce, and Domestic Violence. She has a particular interest in the issues confronting Christian women, and is certified by The American Association of Christian Counselors.

The award-winning author of the October Snow series, Jenna is also the creator of several seminars and coaching processes. She is trained in Batterer Intervention, Trauma and Trauma Informed Care, and is a former state-certified Crisis Advocate and Domestic Violence Hotline veteran.

Jenna says, "I concentrate on advocacy for battered mothers because in my experience, the Family Court often takes up where an abuser leaves off. Too often, these women are every bit as injured by a paternalistic, even oppressive Family Court system as they are by an abuser. Their experiences in the court are simply another betrayal. As a society, we pay little attention to the outcome of battered mothers - both legally and culturally."

Jenna is a former columnist for The Derry News and The Bangor Daily News, and is the former host of "The Café" on WSMN Radio out of Nashua, NH.

After Awareness: Advocating for Battered Women is written by Jenna Brooks. It gives invaluable advice, based on Jenna’s first-hand experience, beliefs and observations, to friends and families of those who have fallen victim to domestic violence while raising awareness of the various types of abuse that can be inflicted, both in and out of a relationship. With all of the televised campaigns with catchy slogans, Jenna states that everybody would now be aware that domestic violence exists, but the campaigns do not explain what to do when you come across somebody who is a victim and feels that they cannot escape. People typically picture a woman with physical injuries that show obvious abuse, but most people do not realize that there are different types of abuse and that, on average, you will walk past at least one person each day who is suffering from the verbal or physical abuse of a loved one. Jenna rightfully explains that the danger after the victim leaves is much higher than when they were with their abuser.

As a domestic violence survivor, I wish there had been a book like After Awareness: Advocating for Battered Women made available to me and to those in my life at the time. The advice within these pages is pure gold. Jenna Brooks is able to objectively inform the reader of how to approach things and, more importantly, what not to do, not only while the battered woman is inside the relationship with her abuser, but also how to help after the victim leaves and tries to start rebuilding her life. I am impressed by the author’s insight and hope that this book will become a ‘handbook’ of sorts, helping to bring an end to abusive relationships, assisting those who fall victim, and eradicating the number of women who pay the ultimate price.
