Stereotypical and self-proclaimed bachelor, thirty-year-old Alex still lives at home. Once on the “right” track and seeking his PhD in physics, Alex sacrificed his goal as a university professor at the hands of his one true love. Lucy had made the heart breaking decision that their relationship was not worth the effort it took to maintain, leaving Alex distraught, depressed and impossible to be around. His part-time university tutoring job filled the gaps in his otherwise empty social life. If not for his younger sister, Kelly, and her best friend, Natalie, Alex would have no communication with the outside world. All that mattered were his books and the security of the neighborhood pub. Then Lucy comes back. She’s different now; softer, forgiving, and exactly the woman he needed. Sometimes things are just too good to be true, though. Lucy cannot stay and Alex returns to his solitary life of dodging the bullies in the neighborhood, searching for the perfect research topic, and connecting only with Kelly and Natalie. Would something good come from his lackluster existence?

Cold Fusion 2000 by Karl Drinkwater is a surprisingly powerful perspective on the life of a “loner.” Set in England, Drinkwater’s dialogue maintains the lively spirit of rural Manchester, creating an other-worldly tone. I appreciated the lesson given that we are never too old to try new things and experience a fresh outlook on life. Normally not delighted with surprises, this reviewer is delightfully surprised with Cold Fusion 2000. I really enjoyed this book.
