Author Biography

A native of Chicago, Elizabeth Kern was born and raised in the old Polish neighborhood she writes about. She attended Loyola University and received a degree in Communications from the University of Illinois. After a thirty-year corporate career where she managed employee communications most recently at Apple in Cupertino, California, she received a Masters of Liberal Arts degree at Stanford University. She is the mother of two grown children. She and her husband, Lee, live in the gentle hills of Sonoma County where vineyards are abundant and the whinny of horses rocks them to sleep at night.

Kern’s passion for Chicago’s history and people has led her to begin another novel that is set in the Windy City in the 1950s.

Wanting to Be Jackie Kennedy a Novel by Elizabeth Kern
This book reads like the life story of the protagonist. She goes back to her teen years and walks us through all the way to the present. This is a book that inspires us to have dreams and make them a reality. It is easy reading and entertaining. It portrays sadness, loss, as well as becoming of age.

Polish Ellie Manikowski, the daughter of emigrants, lived in Chicago most of her growing up years. After making her home in California for many years, returning to Chicago brings back all the memories of her childhood. With a sarcastic cab driver she dares go sightseeing in the old neighborhood.

Her trip through memory lane starts when John Kennedy was sworn in as President of the USA and Jackie, his wife, becomes a great inspiration for her.

In her memories, Ellie wants to become different from the poor emigrants she knows. She wants more, because the young Jackie Kennedy makes a great impression on her young life. Ellie promises Jackie (in her youth,) that she will do better and set her goals high. Her life is sprinkled with disappointments, happy times, and heartaches. Now when her journey through life is almost over she looks back and sees the beauty of it all and how each thing helped her be who she became.

A well put together book. The writing is fluid and the characters are well done. Many adults will enjoy this book and the story it tells. It has some swearing sprinkled here and there, and some sexual talk. Over all it is a good and entertaining read.
