A Collection of Short Stories & Poems, by Gary E. Smith, is an insightful, entertaining work that has something for everyone. The author touches on issues most of us can relate to, from romance to war, and brings these issues to life in story form and poetry. Writing about the human experience is a little harder than it sounds, but Smith makes it seem easy. He effortlessly weaves tales that are simple on the surface but hold deep meaning beneath. As you read, you can't help but put yourself in the shoes of the characters and wonder how you would react in these circumstances. Some of the stories are broad, while others are more specific, so this means that readers will connect with them in different ways and on different levels.

From the first story, which begins as a romance, you will be engaged with Smith's breezy style. I like the feeling of art and culture that winds through the stories, which leads me to believe that the author has the soul of a true artist. The images included in the text add a layer of depth to the entire work. Another thing I like is the way Smith builds his characters. They are multi-layered and realistic--people you could meet on the street any day. He's also good with dialogue, which helps move the stories along at an even, enjoyable pace. If you want to get a real feel for an author's ability and style, read a collection of stories like this. It can demonstrate skill, range, insight, and depth. Being a retired photographer, one of my favorites is "The Photographer". Smith has good instincts, imagination, observation skills, and knows how to translate what he sees and experiences. Immerse yourself in Gary E. Smith's A Collection of Short Stories & Poems for memorable characters and well-told stories.

A Collection of Short Stories & Poems by Gary E. Smith contains some poignant, romantic, and suspenseful stories that explore several themes, including dating, pets, marriage, writing, sexual assault, domestic violence, abduction, murder, dying, and more. A great part of the book is dedicated to stories, while the end contains some poems about love and a character's experience of living alone after losing a lover. One of the stories, No Remorse, depicts an intelligent detective who finds she has to make a tough decision about one of her investigations involving a serial killer. In A Marriage, a married man wonders if he should keep his marriage of 30 years. A touching story about a soldier who is involved in a romantic relationship and goes to fight in a war is portrayed in War.

I love it when I read books that remind me of special moments in my life and things I feel strongly about. A Collection of Short Stories & Poems did exactly this for me with its depiction of various relatable issues and complex, realistic characters. One of the most relatable characters, for me, was the writer who felt alone even through the "new book release party, book signing, or hanging out with friends." This collection is filled with several similarly profound life problems. The book also contains some beautiful pictures that add to its aesthetic feel. This would appeal to fans of different genres, including romance, thriller, and crime. The pace is mostly calm, allowing readers to contemplate the events. Gary E. Smith's book reminds readers that they're not alone in their seemingly isolated struggles with its deeply relatable stories and poems.

A Collection of Short Stories & Poems by Gary E. Smith is a book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy cultural fiction in the form of short stories and poems. This collection is filled with stories and poems that embody different human experiences and emotions. The collection holds more than 20 stories and 15 poems. The book is organized with the stories preceding the poems. The stories vary in length from a few pages to multiple chapters in the case of “Alexandra”. Are you ready to be immersed in loss, love, friendship, aging, and war?

A Collection of Short Stories & Poems by Gary E. Smith is a well-written book offering within its pages stories, emotions, and poems that left me laughing and weeping. Of the stories, my favorite was “The Photographer” - this story just served to capture the real essence of what an artist is. The main character in the story, Sam, embodies a true artist, with his goal of not just capturing a landscape with his camera lens, but rather a feeling. I also found the poems to be thought-provoking and emotionally stimulating, especially with how each poem is paired with an image to enhance it. I personally quite like how the author scatters images throughout the book as they add a nice visual element to complement the writing. Overall, I found this collection to be a wonderful, thought-provoking read that left me hoping to enjoy more from this author in the future.
