After he meets Grace and feels a connection with her, things start looking up for Kevin at last. Unfortunately, this semblance of normalcy proves to be fleeting as Alex meets with a terrible accident while visiting the hospital. While immediate surgery saves his life, he seems to have turned into an entirely different person. What happened during the surgery that could result in such a drastic change? A Field Within by T.C. T.C. Solomon told the story using a scrambled, non-linear approach that kept me engrossed. The rapid shifts in the storyline and the unforeseen twists are sufficient to keep any reader glued to the pages. I loved when the puzzle pieces fell into place, and suddenly, everything made perfect sense. Solomon created flesh and blood characters who would elicit strong responses from the readers. The plot revolved around Kevin, unraveling the story from his perspective. Solomon delved deep into Kevin’s mind, showing us his innermost thoughts that helped us connect to him. Watching his alcoholic mother suffer through his father’s futile attempts at treatment created a long-lasting trauma. A broken marriage and the resulting hostility further embittered him. The heartbreak and grief that followed Kevin made me root for him. I resented Greg, the patriarch who dominated and forced everyone to follow his wishes, even if it came at a hefty price. The book questioned the wisdom of playing God, testing the fine balance between morality and corruption. I recommend A Field Within to anyone who appreciates a medical thriller that leaves readers pondering.
