A Life Worth Living: The Journey of an Authentic Soul by Carla Feagan is the autobiography of Carla’s life journey. Being born on a British air force base in Singapore, Carla holds two citizenship of two countries. In A Life Worth Living, Carla Feagan takes us through the early years of her life in South Africa during the time of racism and apartheid, and then her years living in England and Canada, her relationship with her over-burdened mother and siblings, sexual abuse between the ages of nine and thirteen by an uncle and her brother, her school years, her relationship with her father, men and relationships, marriage and children, and then slowly finding her footing enough to accept herself, travel around the world for a year, and make a home in Mexico, among other things. This is her own journey told in her own words of hope and inspiration.
I liked reading A Life Worth Living: The Journey of an Authentic Soul by Carla Feagan and her mixed heritage especially sheds a light on racism and the perspective from a so-called “colored” person. Although this is a fact, I still feel that Carla could have talked about her experiences or thoughts on race more. Still, there is quite a lot to tell in this book, and the steady and fast-paced writing kept a sequential flow throughout. I appreciated the fact that in spite of her own abuse as a young girl, Carla appears to have not let that affect her parenting or have that spill over into the next generation. Shedding light on the very common issue of post-partum depression is also necessary and is a topic that needs more awareness as well. Overall, this is a memoir of one woman’s journey, coming from some early difficult circumstances to finding present day peace and success in the world.
