A.M.P.D.: Artificial Military Prosthetics Division is a work of fiction in the science fiction and military subgenres, and was penned by author Thomas Hraynyk. The work is best suited to the mature reading audience owing to the presence of graphic violence and sexual content as well as the use of explicit language throughout and some very graphic medical/surgical scenes. As the title suggests, the story focuses on surgical modifications made to soldiers who have suffered in service to their country. We follow protagonist Chase on his journey to adjust to his new limbs, new compatriots, and a dangerous mystery that keeps getting deeper the more he tries to solve it.

Author Thomas Hraynyk presents a gritty, action-packed exploration of what science may be able to do for the military and injured soldiers in the future, with both the benefits and the dire costs developed in an exciting, no-holds-barred narrative style. Provided you can stomach the medical side and the cinematically gory violence, the work delivers an excellent, fast-paced plot with a lot of chances for the central cast to get creative with their new appendages and hidden abilities. Parts of the novel feel like being immersed in a really cool video game, such is the quality of Hraynyk’s writing as he brings us up close to the action. Military fiction fans will find plenty of references and ideas developed and woven into this highly original science fiction piece, and as such, I’d certainly recommend A.M.P.D.: Artificial Military Prosthetics Division for fans of both these blockbuster genres.

A.M.P.D. by Thomas Hraynyk is a story about conflict, wrapped within an environment of rapidly growing technological advances and personal greed, where family ties take a back seat to ambition. The truly gruesome thing about this deadly game of deceit is that innocents get swept up in the maelstrom and Chase Campbell is the newest victim of this power play. After a tragic explosion badly injures Chase in Turkey, his future is pre-determined in ways he can’t imagine, and he is propelled on a journey of discovery that will take him to shocking conclusions and perilous confrontations. This is a path Chase would not have chosen, but with no alternative available to him, he is determined to unravel the truth behind the events that inexorably damaged his body and future existence. There is no certainty that he will succeed.

Thomas Hraynyk’s A.M.P.D. is an easy-to-read action adventure with a lot of combat situations and graphic content in tune with the overall plot. The characters are well constructed and build realistic relationships over time, with a nice blend of surprises and some hidden feelings that are well crafted; the relationship between Crow and Sun was a great example of this. In many ways, A.M.P.D. is a powerful read, but the most prevalent feeling I was left with was that of despair because I know that this is a work of fiction, but I am certain the types of manipulation and abuse covered actually take place on a day-to-day basis in the real world. That is a sobering realization that everyone should contemplate, and A.M.P.D. may just be the catalyst to discovery.

First Lieutenant Chase Campbell was in a caravan carrying medical supplies when they walked into an ambush in the Turkish region. The damage to Chase’s right side was extensive, causing the Commanding General Seagar to send him off to the AMPD. At the Artificial Military Prosthetics Division (AMPD), Chase acquired robotic limbs. He met other select people like him, who formed a team under the General’s command. The team would go after two notorious arms-dealing siblings and a former Romanian Army General recruiting for a terrorist group. As the group advanced in their mission, they fell into a tangled web of manipulation stretched far beyond their imaginations. In A.M.P.D. by Thomas Hraynyk, everyone is a pawn and only the cleverest and bravest will survive.

A.M.P.D. by Thomas Hraynyk was a fast-paced and action-packed novel that kept me on the edge of my seat. The book explored manipulation, power tussles, politics, deception, espionage, military might, betrayal, robotics, and more. I felt like I was watching a war between father (Dr. Peck) and son (Velnias) that snowballed into anarchy with everyone as collateral. The plot was brilliant, the story was realistic, and the characters were enthralling. Thomas is a talented writer who threw in unpredictable twists that captured my attention. I fell in love with the hilarious Sun and the fantastic robotic six. Brug was all muscle and no smarts, but I developed a grudging respect for Crow and Velnias! My appreciation goes to all the fallen, maimed, and active soldiers who put their lives on the line every day. This book deserves the big screen, and I want to read subsequent installments.
