A Persistent Echo by Brian Kaufman relates the tale of August Simms, a world-renowned explorer. He returns to Rhome, Texas in 1897 in his twilight years, driven by a relentless curiosity about a mysterious flying machine. He takes up residence in the same room he shared with his late wife in 1882 at the local boarding house. He finds Nadine, the daughter of the previous caretaker, who at first has no memory of him. As he travels in and out of Rhome, Simms meets various people who offer conflicting information about the said machine. However, he does not give up and keeps pursuing leads with the help of Ackerman and his horse, Bullet. While focusing on his current adventure, Simms and his old friends from Texas unearth a dark past that all of them would rather forget.

A Persistent Echo by Brian Kaufman showcases his skillful writing style in a serious and engaging tone in this historical mystery read. Although the narrative is easy to read, it still manages to capture the reader's attention. Kaufman's character development is commendable. He takes time to build each character, including the minor ones, giving them unique personalities and quirks, making it easy for readers to follow along despite the size of the cast. As the narrative unfolds, readers are drawn into the quest for truth, both past and present. This is a tale of adventure, mystery, and unyielding determination.
