Leon Safullo is an FBI psychiatric profiler, a pragmatic and realistic person who bases his work solely on interpreting symptoms of aberrant human behavior. While investigating the terrible death of a popular evangelist, Reverend Lawrence Livingston, Leon learns about the disappearance of Paul Evans, CEO of a major corporation. What he doesn’t know is that he is dealing with a powerful alter ego named Pearl. In fact, it is Antonio Guzman and he is a sinister combination of human and spirit. While challenging Leon might be one of his motives, he plans something even bigger, and it starts with Paul. Follow Paul and his son as they struggle to reclaim their lives from a powerful evil, a fight that takes them to the Rocky Mountains and through a terrible crucible. Will they survive the onslaught? Leon’s investigation will change him in ways he never could have thought possible.

A Season of Sons is the first book in the Black Spiral series by Rob Tucker, and it is an explosive opening in a mind-blowing reading experience for fans of horror and paranormal. Themes of deception, illusion, and murder are deftly written, and the suspense exemplifies the narrative. The story is told in beautiful and highly descriptive prose and the imagery is strong and psychologically disturbing. The novel reflects the work of an imaginative mind, with plot twists that I never saw coming. The reader is gripped from the start by the mystery and then the suspense that sustains the narrative. Rob Tucker creates characters that are rock-solid and puts them into situations that increase the reader’s anxiety for them. I believe that the stronger the adversary the more robust the protagonist of a tale, and this author proves that when he creates a character like Guzman. Every other character, including Leon, Paul, and his son Matt, and even Jenny, must rise up and grow in stature to offer a corresponding response to what they are dealing with. A Season of Sons is a spellbinder.
