Jory, the female protagonist of A Thousand Faces by Janci Patterson, is special: she has grown up in a shapeshifter family, which means that her parents, as well as Jory herself, have the ability to morph their body into someone else's. Her parents, like many other shapeshifters, work as spies. It sounds easy enough: find a target, turn into that person and then enter the target location as a copy. In reality, however, there is a lot to consider, and a lot that can go wrong. Jory learns this during her first mission. Unfortunately, that first mission was nothing compared to what awaited Jory: her parents go missing during one job. Together with the help of a special friend, Jory tries to find out the truth about their disappearance, but soon discovers that the truth is almost more than she can bear.
I decided to read A Thousand Faces by Janci Patterson because I was intrigued by Arya Stark's story line in Game of Thrones (she can basically turn into anyone under certain circumstances), and found the idea of someone being able to change at will and use this for jobs - and also as a survival method - very fascinating. The book did not disappoint. I found it interesting and exciting from start to finish. I particularly liked that it was a bit gritty and not filled with soppy happily ever afters. That doesn't mean it's a depressing story with nothing good happening though! It's just closer to reality than happily ever afters. The characters have to go through challenges and deal with losses. Some things come at a price, and Jory cannot avoid paying it. It was easy to get lost in the story, the writing was smooth and engrossing. There was a good balance of action and quieter scenes; you weren't overwhelmed with one or the other. I'm definitely interested in finding out what will happen to Jory in the future. She's a great character!
