Abigail’s grandmother passed away a few years ago and her grandfather has been heartbroken ever since. Abigail’s childhood sweetheart, Michael, moved away to an Amish community in Canada about the same time as her grandmother passed away. Two broken hearts in one Amish family. Michael came back and he’s been trying to get Abigail’s attention ever since his return. But her grandfather has decided that this will be his last Christmas; he wants to go to heaven to be with the Lord and the love of his life. That is until his granddaughter gets it into her head that the annual sleigh ride that her grandparents did as a couple every Christmas Eve was just what her grandfather needed. That and a little encouragement and a whole lot of praying. The sleigh was waiting in the barn, the tack and bells were where they were last hung and the horses are raring to go.

Murray Pura’s Amish Christmas novella, Abigail’s Christmas Miracle, is a gentle story full of many kinds of love: love for a sweetheart, love for family, love for a special grandfather, and, of course, love for God. The Amish people and their beliefs come alive in this charming story. The characters are well developed and realistic, as is the setting. Great descriptive passages help lead the story along and make the reader feel as if they are part of the story. The plot develops at a casual pace as Abigail allows her love and faith to embrace her grandfather to make him want to live again. Abigail and her grandfather are the two main characters for most of the story, though Michael enters about half-way through and becomes a significant character as well. The other characters are important to the story and are developed just enough to make the plot come together in a powerful story of family love and faith.
