In “Absurd,” Said Bird: Traveler Series Book 1 by Tricia Gardella, Mouse decides he is going to fly to the moon in an airplane to bring back some of the cheese found there. The cow, horse, hen, duck, turkey, lamb, and pig are okay with this plan, but the bird says it’s absurd. As Mouse begins to construct his plane from junk found at the back of the barn, he enlists the help of the other animals, promising them a share of the cheese he brings back. The animals are excited about Mouse’s trip, and they all assist him in his endeavor. They help gather the materials Mouse will need to build his plane, but Bird is sure his plan will fail, especially when Mouse wants the animals to push him and his plane off the cliff. What secret does Bird know that he’s not sharing? Will the mouse get to the moon, or end up at the bottom of the ravine?

“Absurd,” Said Bird by Tricia Gardella is a delightful tale that early readers can enjoy reading to themselves. The words are simple and the conversations between the animals are humorous. The beautiful illustrations by Ginger Nielson carry the young reader's imagination along easily on this mouse-brained scheme to get all the cheese he could ever need. Along with the many barnyard animals that the young reader can identify, there are objects that a parent can point out to help their child learn even more. Between the covers of this little treasure, children can learn about working together for a common goal, and the power of friendship. Perfect for early readers and animal lovers everywhere.
