Across the Ice by Dana Fraedrich is a spellbinding conclusion to the Broken Gears steampunk series, a story that reads well as a standalone novel and that has great potential to entertain fans of young adult fantasy. Lenore has suffered an enormous loss, thanks to the cruelty of the Reaper's collective. While she finds it hard to forgive her friend, Copper, for enabling the murders by not doing anything, she decides to focus on revenge. Rook might be the power to take down the Reaper, but doom is spelled out when the most powerful crime lords in Springhaven choose to collaborate against the Reaper’s collective. Lenore and her friends are caught up in a web of dangerous plots and deadly intrigue. Will Springhaven blow up the same way the Halls of Justice did?

Dana Fraedrich has written a beautiful novel with extraordinary characters. The setting is a city rife with danger and conflict, with powerful gangs pitting against each other and ordinary people suffering the effects. The characters are elaborately developed and relatable. Lenore is a character who carries a lot of pain in her heart and she feels deeply for her friends and loved ones. I enjoyed the way the author handles motivation in this character. Pain and the desire for revenge drive her and she finds herself entangled in a conflict far greater than she bargained for. Across the Ice features very beautiful prose; it is tight and descriptive, sprinkled with engaging dialogues. It is a story that is fast-paced, filled with action and memorable characters.
