Author Biography

Beth Brown, Ph.D., is a life-long educator on a mission to inspire families and kids to have fun, become more active and learn life skills through sports in her children’s book series “Adventures with Divot & Swish.” After picking up a basketball at age 2 and swinging her first golf club at age 8, Beth was hooked on sports. Her youth sport participation paved the way for her collegiate success as a member of the University of Oklahoma basketball and conference champion women’s golf teams.

As her love for sports continued, she realized the unique opportunity sport has to impact not only physical abilities, but life skill development as well. This led Beth to earn her Ph.D. in sport psychology at the University of Kansas. Since then, she’s gone on to influence and impact thousands through her roles as a golf coach, an educational program developer at First Tee and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, and founder of the coaching and consulting agency, Team Aureus.

Beth’s inspiration for the “Adventures with Divot & Swish” children’s book series comes from her own adventures, experiences with sports and time with friends. When she isn’t writing the next adventure for Divot & Swish, Beth enjoys cheering on her beloved Sooners, riding her bike, and spending time with family, friends, and puppy Truman. She is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation and lives in Norman, Oklahoma.

Adventures with Divot & Swish in the Ozark Mountains by Beth Brown is a fun story about bike riding and adventuring! I loved how it encourages kids to get out there and explore the world while being physically active. I also loved the various plugs for bike safety. As a mom who currently has a 2-year-old on a balance bike, this was a great book to read with him and teach him how to ride safely.

In terms of formatting, I loved how each page altered between illustration and text. The full-color images are great for kids, and while there was quite a bit of text per page in this book, it was developmentally appropriate for even 3-year-olds and above. The illustrations were such fun! I loved the bright colors, the humanized Divot and Swish, and the stylization of the artwork. The artist - Charlotte Strickland - really knew how to put action into every scene.

Beth Brown has created a perfect "slice of life" children's book that paints a lovely picture of the Ozarks. While I’ve never been to that area of the country before, this book made me wish I could visit. I also loved how this book dealt with peer pressure and even social anxiety. Everything in the story builds up to learning how to be confident in yourself - with riding a bike or dealing with kids teasing you. What a heavy load for such a small book! Adventures with Divot & Swish in the Ozark Mountains is a great read and I would have loved a physical copy to read with my little ones.
