People come in all shapes and sizes and, yes, colors, too. We are all different, unique, original. Can you imagine what the world would be like if we all looked exactly the same, if we all liked to do exactly the same things and we all were good at doing exactly the same thing? Sound dull? You bet. It’s important to accept all our uniqueness and individual looks and likes. Isn’t it rather reassuring to realize that there really is only one like me and one like you? I think so. But, as well as accepting and rejoicing in all the differences amongst us, we have to show respect and recognize the importance of these differences: the differences in nationalities, physical size and shape and personal preferences, and so much more. Why? Because we’re all beautiful, no matter what.

Vincent Kelly’s picture book story, All People Are Beautiful, is a special book in so many ways. The repeated phrase, “All people are beautiful,” will have young readers coming up with suggestions themselves of some of the beautiful people in their communities and how each of the differences makes individuals beautiful just the way they are. The author leads the reader through basic differences of age, size, shape and hair color, to different activities different people enjoy, expanding to differences based on country of origin and languages spoken. Then he points out the dullness of what the world would be like if everyone was exactly the same. And how are these differences important? “All people are beautiful. It doesn’t matter what you look like. What matters is that we treat each other right.” Powerful words which are followed by some examples of how we can “treat each other right.” The book concludes with some activities to encourage young readers to explore the differences within their own community. Beautiful illustrations.
