Amaskan's War by Raven Oak is the second book in The Boahim Series, preceded by the award-winning and well-received first installment, Amaskan's Blood. This is epic fantasy adventure at its finest, with a world built through a mosaic of kingdoms called The Little Dozen of Boahim. With her life having been ravaged by crushing losses—both her twin sister and father, the King—and still reeling from a harrowing first marriage, Queen Margaret sees her kingdom on the brink of war. The Senate, who hold the power to intervene, refuse to do so. Left without any choice but to fight for the sovereignty and power that are hers by right, and the truth and justice that are hers by virtue, Margaret must rise up against all odds, even against those who are on her own side.

Raven Oak has written a gorgeous follow-up in The Boahim Series with Amaskan's War. There is no question that the gut-wrenching finale to Amaskan's Blood left readers feeling absolutely bowled over. Oak has a gift in her storytelling; a rare ability to make a reader feel like she's ripped out the jugular but, even after the trauma of such an act, still keeps us engaged, trusting in the writing (which is exceptional), the story, and thoroughly developed characters to pick up the flag and continue carrying a worthy plot. The dialogue is authentic, the world is exquisitely depicted, and Margaret herself blossoms into a powerhouse before our very eyes. If there is such a thing as a “sloggy middle” when it comes to a series, it appears nobody told Raven Oak that.
