Heather Moll opens An Affectionate Heart with Elizabeth Bennet, preparing to travel to Longbourn. She dreads living with her sister Mary and her dull husband, Mr. Collins, as they looked down on her for not being married. While Elizabeth didn’t care for gossip, she learns that a new neighbor has joined the community. Mr. Darcy is not a social person in nature, but he attends a large party and Elizabeth notices he listens to the conversation she has about the theater. Elizabeth excuses herself to another room. Elizabeth suffers from severe heart palpitations that she tries to keep secret. Mr. Darcy walks into the room to get his coat and notices her suffering. After learning that his sister, Georgiana, is an invalid and his reason for eavesdropping on her conversation, Elizabeth sends some music and a book. She then makes her way to the residence and becomes friends with Georgiana. After a trip to an apothecary, Elizabeth approaches Mr. Darcy with a proposition that would dramatically affect the future of everyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed An Affectionate Heart. Heather Moll wrote engaging characters that were easy to connect with. Elizabeth was an independent, intelligent woman who had no problem speaking her mind. Mr. Darcy found this to be a positive trait and would engage in several debates with her. I believe Elizabeth didn’t want to become considered a burden, and she was the epitome of a nurturer. Since her family criticized her, she created her role in Georgiana’s care. This care was therapeutic for Georgiana, Mr. Darcy, and herself. The transitions from Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy’s viewpoints were clear, and the thoughts of each character were relatable. The suspense in the story was intense, and the romance element added to my need to keep reading. I recommend anyone that enjoys a realistic romance story that is filled with drama to read An Affectionate Heart. I know this book will be one of my favorites to read multiple times.
