An Ode to Cleve is penned by author John Paul McKinney in the adventure, animals, and drama genres. It is intended for young independent readers. Readers are introduced to sixth grader Nicholas Tullamore, whose struggle with stuttering and relentless bullying has driven him to despair. Finding solace in his dog Cleve, Nicholas decides to bring Cleve onstage for the school's speech contest, hoping to end the torment. However, the principal's ban on dogs threatens his plan, leaving Nicholas with the choice of devising a new strategy or facing humiliation.
Author John Paul McKinney has crafted a heartwarming and poignant book in which the central themes of courage and resilience teach a very valuable lesson for young readers. The narration is clear and enjoyable, but it also does a great job of subtly capturing Nicholas's vulnerability and determination, making his journey relatable and compelling with a strong emotional core. As Nicholas navigates the challenges of bullying and self-acceptance, the bond between him and Cleve shines through, and I absolutely adored the cheerful and vibrant descriptions used to bring Cleve to life. The dialogue was another great development as it sounded so distinctly childlike and age-appropriate, However, there was a good balance of getting the deeper points across in a way that can help young people vocalize their struggles and anxieties. McKinney's blend of heart, humor, and honesty creates a touching tribute to the power of friendship and the strength found within oneself. Overall, An Ode to Cleve is a highly recommended read for youngsters and the young at heart alike.
