It was Christmas Eve and Grandmother Rosa was in the kitchen, roasting corn pancakes and beating rich and foamy chocolate with her whisk. As she sat at the kitchen table and reviewed the details of her recipe, she knew her confection would taste good. Grandmother's Dulce de Leche was famous and she got many orders. Grandpa Fermin had a special frying pan made for so that Grandma Rosa could use it to prepare enough for all. Grandmother Rosa worked that morning - she cooked, swept, and cleaned and Little Anita and Grandpa Fermin were impressed. Grandpa Fermin had helped by repairing and decorating the house; he painted the walls, changed the broken tiles, and repaired the wooden fence in the front yard. Toffee, Anita's dog, and Pandora, Grandmother Rosa's spoiled cat, were responsible for the mess in the garden. The Christmas tree that was installed had a lot of memories. Would Anita be able to learn the recipe of Dulce le Leche from her Grandma and be the proud heiress of the family's treasured recipe?

Anita and Grandma's Dulce de Leche: Anita y el dulce de leche de la Abuela: Bilingual (English/Spanish) by Pilar Velez is an enchanting story about family values, the inheritance handed down from generation to generation that unites a family and helps them to remember their cultural identities and value their traditions. Natalia Jimenez's wonderful illustrations make the story and the concept appealing to readers. The characters of Grandpa, Grandma, and Anita have been beautifully portrayed and the message of love, family bonding, inheritance, cultural identities, and traditions have been neatly woven into the story. It is a good book for storytelling in classrooms and school libraries, and being a bilingual book (English/Spanish), it reaches out to a wider audience. The author also shares the recipe of Dulce le Leche at the end of the story so that anyone interested in trying it out can do so easily.
