Anti Gravity Device Company by John Oliver is an inspiring and compelling story that will appeal to both sports fans and readers who are looking for a great story that can encourage them to pursue their dreams. This is an old carpenter’s memoir that explores his and his son’s journey in building skateboarding ramps and skate parks in Hawaii and California, a story that shows readers the behind-the-scenes work performed by dedicated individuals. Discover a father and his fifteen-year-old son at the Premiere for The Search for Animal Chin in Santa Barbara, California and follow them in their experiences with the skateboarding world of Powell-Peralta and how they came to create some of the iconic skate parks. You’ll be entertained beyond anything you could imagine.

The author has a very poetic way of writing; captivating, delightful, and hypnotic. Look at this simple phrase that opens the narrative: “In the foggy back roads of time, my memories, all black and white and flickering, I was 10 years old in 1954.” I found it very appealing and there are many that will bring a smile to the reader’s face. The writing is really exceptional and it brings out the setting powerfully. As I read John Oliver’s memoir, I couldn’t help but enjoy the bond between father and son. This could be a book about their adventures in skateboarding, but it is also a story of friendship, of doing meaningful work and of transforming lives from behind-the-scenes. Anti Gravity Device Company is deft and balanced, told with an ebullient narrative voice that will grab readers and keep them reading on. It was a fascinating and delightful reading experience for me, a book filled with lessons and powerful insights about life.
